Let’s learn something from Charlie Sheen

He’s not really going to use the downward (yet highly entertaining) downfall of Charlie Sheen to make a point about marketing for staffing? Yes he is!

In just over 24 hours Charlie Sheen went from 0 Twitter followers to 1,000,000, a Guinness Record!  The man has made a brand out of a single word, #winning!

How can you find similar success? Well it will help if you are a mad, attention craving (yet highly entertaining), celebrity.  If not, you can still build up your Twitter followers with a few simple steps.

I just took a look at a handful of staffing clients on Twitter and was pretty surprised at how many don’t follow these simple tips.

Twitter Handle – Now don’t get me wrong I’m a firm believer in corporate branding and making sure that your name is out there as much as possible.  But let’s face it, one of the biggest reasons that staffing firms use Twitter is to promote job openings.  So instead of using @XYZStaffing why not use @buffalojobs?  Make it as easy as possible for people to find what they are looking for.

Hashtags – In my completely un-scientific review of staffing Twitter pages, I didn’t see one hashtag being used.  Hashtags are used to look up tweets on specific subjects.  For example if I wanted to look at tweets about Charlie Sheen I would search for #winning. So if you were posting an accounting job in Buffalo why wouldn’t you add a hashtag of #accountingbuffalo or #accountingjobs or even #accountingjobsbuffalo, if the room allowed for it.  Makes sense right?

Go Crazy – Ok, not Sheen crazy.  As I alluded to before, most staffing firms are using Twitter to post current job openings.  But there are a number of other posts that you can add to your Twitter account:

  • Top Candidates – Just as you would promote your hot job openings, why not promote your most placeable candidates.
  • Community Events – Many of my clients are active in community programs.  Post links to the event pages and talk about why it’s important to your firm to be active in charities or community programs.
  • Start a discussion – Ask a simple question of your followers.  “What are you currently paying accountants?” “What are the best ways to improve morale”.  Responses will be limited to the 140 characters but it will get you interacting with you followers and may even get some new followers.
  • Respond to others – Is there an HR guru or business leader you admire?  Follow that person on Twitter and respond to their Tweets.  Just remember to include their handle in your response.  They may retweet your response which can often lead to more followers.

These are just a few tips on how you can keep your firm #winning on Twitter.
