Color of the Year: Predicting a Prosperous 2013?

Share this:

Selecting colors can be difficult. Anyone who has developed or redesigned a company logo, or even simply redecorated their house, knows this.

Colors affect people in different ways – they evoke a feeling or a reaction. How a color affects someone depends on their age, gender, ethnic background – or even prior association with that color. I will never forget the yellow bunkbeds in my room growing up – and my fear of falling out of the top bunk. Ever since then, I’ve had an aversion to the color yellow!

In Western culture, some common associations of colors include:

Red: Passion, Anger, Vigor, Love, Danger

Green:   Fertility, Wealth, Healing, Success, Growth

White:    Purity, Healing, Perfection, Clean, Virtue

Gray: Balance, Sophistication, Neutrality, Uncommitted

So, how does one go about assigning a “Color of the Year?”

Best known standardizing colors for printing purposes with their Pantone Matching System (PMS), the Pantone Institute has been designating a color of the year since 2000. A few weeks ago they announced Emerald for 2013. Given that green is associated with wealth, success and growth – let’s hope their selection is a sign of good things to come. May you all have a very Emerald-Colored Year!
