Site SEO: How will Google’s changes affect staffing firm websites and SEO?

Share this:

I’ve been asked some interesting questions lately about SEO and Google’s upcoming plans for 2009:

  • Will Google’s new changes make my staffing firm’s website impossible to find?
  • If I don’t have movies, podcasts or other interactive features will Google ignore my website?
  • If I don’t have a Facebook, LinkedIn, or MySpace profile, will candidates stop visiting my site?

Contrary to what you might hear Google’s new changes and Web 2.0 won’t make your staffing website useless.  If you rank well now, your website won’t suddenly be impossible to find.  Google won’t ignore you if you don’t post movies.  And candidates won’t stop visiting your site if they know you’re not on Facebook.

BUT…
Your website won’t disappear at 12:01 on January 1st…but if you stand idle you will see your rankings fall–and your competitor’s rankings climb.

At last month’s PubCon event in Las Vegas, Google’s Matt Cutts was interviewed and asked a few questions about what changes Google anticipates in 2009 (Click here for the interview).

To save you the trouble of reading/watching the interview, Matt’s key point was this: Content is King.

Google and the other major search engines are getting much better with matching people’s search criteria, to websites that offer relevant and timely information.  This information could be in the form of articles, blog posts, movies, podcasts–the more content you have, the better.

For staffing and recruiting firms, that means you have to be more diligent about updating your website with good information.  For example, if you’re a recruiter that focuses on a niche industry you could be an information resource for industry professionals.  Post links to relevant industry articles, provide executive summaries of books, offer case studies, etc.  For general temporary staffing firms, you could provide candidates with career advice, resume tips, a calendar of local networking events, etc.

The key is to update your website often and provide relevant content for your audience.

Be on the lookout for my next post which will focus on social networks like Facebook and LinkedIn–and when/how they can help with your recruiting, networking and branding efforts.
