Most of us growing up were taught not to judge a book by its cover. Subsequently, I find that, while browsing my local bookstore, I absolutely pick up books based on how interesting their covers look.
I can’t be the only one, right? We can’t help it…folks are just naturally drawn to things that look spiffy!
I ask because the golden Internet being known as Google has again changed the rules for online searching, and it very well could affect your business. Previously, Google Search results listed some basic information, possibly an address and phone number, that was it. Here’s the latest…
Google recently added a new Instant Previews feature. Internet users can now click a small magnifying glass next to websites in their search results, and see fairly large snapshots of sites for review – all without leaving the actual search results. Instead of reading the “book” to get an idea of its contents, Internet users can essentially judge your site by its “cover.”
What does this mean for your business?
If your site is a bit long in the tooth, or if the design is outdated, users could pass you by in their search results. Our natural tendency to be drawn toward things that look nice will work toward some companies’ benefit with this new feature, and could be absolutely devastating to others.
