Ask Haley: How can I grow my social media followers?

Share this:

Q: Our company has set up a Twitter account and Facebook page but we aren’t getting any followers. What can we do to increase our followers on social media sites?

A: This is actually one of the most common questions we get from our social media clients. Most people have realized by now that social media is not a trend; though it will continue to change and evolve, it’s here to stay. Creating a social media presence for your business is great, but it’s not enough. You have to engage your audience and grow your followers. Here are a few fast and easy ways to do that.

Tell people about it. This may seem like a “no-duh” solution, but it’s often overlooked. No one is going to visit your Facebook page if they don’t know it exists. Tell your audience about it in as many ways as you can. Add social media links to your email signatures. If you send out regular newsletters, be sure to include links there too. When you email clients or job candidates, include a link to your Facebook page and ask them to “like” it. Link to your Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn pages on your company home page and anywhere else you can. You could add links to your online job listings. You may even want to put signage up in your brick and mortar locations to promote your social media pages. If your recruiters encourage applicants to “like” you on Facebook, you’ll have a large following in no time!

Interact with users. One of the easiest ways to grow your followers on Twitter is to search for and follow the users you want to follow you. In most cases, people will reciprocate and follow you back. Once you’ve found some people to follow on Twitter, you should interact with them. Seek out influencers in your industry and local community, and pay attention to what they’re talking about. Feel free to retweet what you think is interesting, and comment when you have a reaction to something the experts are talking about. If Twitter users see someone they view as an expert interacting with you, they’ll start to view you as an expert as well.

Have great content. Content is always going to be the best way to keep your audience interested. Creating good content is not as difficult as many people think. It can be as simple as sharing an article or blog post you find interesting. Post it and ask your Facebook and Twitter followers what they thought of the article. You can do the same with articles from your own blog. Keep your eyes on industry news, and share it. Users will start to see you as a news source and follow you. Your content doesn’t always have to be business-related. If you want to give your social media presence a little taste of your personality, go ahead and share things that amuse you. Remember: if it’s something you’re interested in, you may be able to connect on a more personal level with your target audience. Provide consistently interesting content, and the followers will come to you.
