If A Tweet Falls in the Woods Does Anybody Hear it?

Share this:

Alright maybe the title is a little ridiculous, but hear me out. A few weeks ago I was talking to a friend, who is also a successful entrepreneur, about Twitter. We got to talking about social media and he made a comment that caught me off guard. Keep in mind he has over 10,000 authentic Twitter followers. He said, “You know, a lot of people tweet at me but I just ignore them. I don’t have to respond to those…right?”

I still remember my response as I type this. I said back to him, “If you and I were sitting here and you were talking to me as I sat looking the other way, even though you continued to try to get my attention would you keep talking to me? No.” And, as much as I remember saying that, I remember the ahah look on his face as he began to understand Twitter and social media.

Twitter by the Numbers
Statistics published by Twitter claim that there are 230 million active users on the social media platform and that those users post roughly 500 million tweets per day. These people are talking about their happiness, frustration, challenges, and successes.

Additionally, these users are using Twitter as a direct way to engage with brands and organizations that they have come in contact with. In fact, in a recent survey by Lithium Technologies it was reported that 53% of customers expect a brand to respond to a tweet directed to them in less than 1 hour.

As an organization, standing on your soapbox and screaming into the clutter of 500 million tweets is going to do you very little in the long run. Start listening!

So what does this mean for the staffing industry?
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks or more) was essentially unchanged at 4.1 million in November. These individuals accounted for 37.3% of the unemployed.”

People who are proactively searching for a job are using all platforms they can think of, including Twitter. Use social media to become the solution people are looking for.

But how?

Immediate Strategies to Implement on Twitter

  • Develop a Following
Social media in its very nature is about being social. Don’t sit in the corner like a shy 6th grader at his first dance! Get out there and make some friends. Be proactive in searching for organizations and people within your area that are active on Twitter. Follow them and then reach out to them (tweet them) saying you’re looking forward to hearing their message. Better yet, join the conversation and reply to what their saying. Develop a relationship and position yourself as a thought leader in your given market.
  • How Can Twitter Help You Find Candidates?
Maybe I’m starting to repeat myself, but if you want to be heard…start listening. Social media, Twitter especially, is a conversation. Remember the story about my friend? Don’t ignore people, especially if their comments are negative. Instead, hear them out and address their concerns.

Furthermore, a recent twitter search for “Looking for a Job” (no hashtags or specific location-based keywords) turned up hundreds of tweets from people communicating with each other using this phrase or a derivation of it. Step into the conversation, introduce your organization, and see how you can help.

  • Promoting Jobs
This article is about listening. But this point is important for when you engage and interact with clients and candidates. If you have job orders to fill Twitter is an excellent way to promote these offerings. Tweeting available positions while using relevant hashtags (#) will increase the chances of your tweet showing up in search.

Here are some examples:

#NowHiring in #Buffalo. We are looking to fill immediate warehouse positions. Let us help you with your #JobSearch. Call us at (716)999-9999

  • Set Up an RSS Feed
Although I consistently preach the benefits of engaging with users on social media, another option for sharing available jobs is to set up an RSS feed from your job board to Twitter to automate a feed of available jobs as you publish them.

It is important to remember that this is the first step, and not the last step. Automating job postings to Twitter is a great tool, but it is still important to check your Mentions to see if anybody reached out to you for more information.
