My Favorite Podcasts: Staffing, Writing, Productivity, Fun

Share this:

As you may have heard, Haley Marketing Group recently launched a podcast. Secrets of Staffing Success is hosted in-house by our broadcasting guru Todd Lewandowski. In his first episode, he interviews Jenifer Lambert of Terra Staffing Group. Jenifer and Todd discuss her firm’s strategies for success and what it takes to set yourself apart in a crowded field.

It’s available on Stitcher, iTunes and Google Play.

While this is obviously my top podcast, here are some of my other favorites:

Writing

The Copywriter Club

Each podcast episode is an interview with a successful copywriter or content creator willing to share ideas and best practices with hosts Kira Hug and Rob Marsh. The show is mainly geared toward freelancers, but there are plenty of tips that are useful for just about anyone who needs to write engaging copy as part of their job. If you write sales letters to potential clients or send emails to candidates, chances are you’ll learn something from this podcast.

The Writer Files

Hosted by Kelton Reid, this podcast discusses the habits and attitudes that keep some of today’s best writers across a range of genres productive and creative. I would argue that this podcast is not just for writers – there are loads of tips on getting the most out of every day.

Grammar Girl

Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing

As Grammar Girl, host Mignon Fogarty provides “short, friendly tips to improve your writing.” She “makes complex grammar questions simple with memory tricks to help you recall and apply those troublesome grammar rules.”

Productivity

The Tim Ferris Show

How do you not love listening to someone whose entire life is one big experiment? His podcasts tend to be long and rambling which is perfect when I’m trying to get things done.

Accidental Creative

This podcast, created by Todd Henry, offers productivity tips to creatives of all stripes – particularly those called upon to create on demand. Recent podcast topics have included procrastination, avoiding the hustle trap and how to be brave in your work.

Fun

Wait, Wait… Don’t Tell Me

This is NPR’s weekly current events show. Hosted by Peter Sagal and a gang of other public radio miscreants, the show is available on podcast and includes both audience participation and celebrity guests. Regular features include Bluff the Listener, Not my Job and Lightning Fill in the Blank.

Ask Me Another

Hosted by Ophira Eisenberg along with musician Jonathan Coulton, this live quiz show combines music, comedy, audience participation and celebrity guests. It airs weekly on NPR and is available on podcast. (fun fact, I recently attended a taping at The Bell House in Brooklyn)

Guilty Pleasure

The West Wing Weekly

This is a kind of stealth writerly topic because Aaron Sorkin dialogue is second to none. The podcast follows the classic show week by week. Actor Josh Malina and Hrishikesh Hirway of Song Exploder discuss the minutia of each episode in unimaginable granularity that can only be appreciated by a true Wingnut. They are joined frequently by special guests, often those involved in the TV series. The entire original series is available on Netflix so that you can watch each episode before listening to the corresponding podcast.

Do you listen to podcasts? What keeps you informed, educated and productive?
