The Road Map to Social Media Success: Identifying Your Goals

Everybody loves to go on vacation.

But,  you wouldn’t go on vacation without knowing your end destination.

You wouldn’t get in your car and simply drive, hoping that you make it to the beach or a resort. Instead, you would think about that end destination and work backward, developing an effective strategy that would get you there safely and in the most efficient way possible.

Your staffing firm’s social media strategy should follow the same mentality!

Before you think about the tactics and what you’d like to do on social media you should sit down and think about the goals you’re trying to achieve! Otherwise, how will you know if what you did was effective? How will you know if you reached your end destination?

So, before you sit down and make that next Facebook post about your office happy hour. Before you try to land more applications with Facebook Jobs. Before you try to use Snapchat at your next job fair. Think about why you’re on social media in the first place. Think about the goal your working towards. Every social media post should have a purpose and that purpose should relate to the overall SMART goals of your organization.

Understanding SMART Goals

SMART goals can turn your hope or wish into a quantifiable goal to achieve over the next month, quarter or year.

What are SMART Goals?

  1. Specific
  2. Measurable
  3. Attainable
  4. Realistic
  5. Time-Bound

In the video above, I reference an example of welding applications.

If you were to say “I want more applications” that’s really just a hope or wish. At that point, you’re hoping welding applications miraculously come across your desk or make there way into your inbox.

How to Make a Wish a SMART Goal

Make it specific!

“I want more welding applications”

Make it measurable!

“I want 50 more welding applications than I received last month”

Make it Time-Bound

“I want 50 more welding applications than I received last month by January 1, 2018”

But, what about attainable and realistic?

To me, this comes down to your own personal opinion and understanding of your organization. Was the month before a record-setting month? If so, are 50 more welding applications really possible? Should we look at lowering this goal to 30? 25? 10? What is actually attainable based on the resources you’re willing to invest in reaching this goal.

For sake of this post, let’s say 50 additional welding applications is attainable.

Is the goal realistic? If you were to obtain 50 applications from qualified welders in your area could you place them on assignment?
