By day, we’re marketing geeks. Computer nerds. Quirky writers and artists. And damn proud of it!

But after hours, our team members shed their marketing capes – and pursue all kinds of cool Hobbies, Interests and Talents (we call them HITs for short).

Here’s what Elaine Materise, a Social Media Marketing Advisor with Haley Marketing, is into:

HIT: Field Hockey

Back Story

My mom played field hockey in high school, and when I was young she showed me her old equipment she had stored in our basement. I always thought her field hockey stick looked weird, because it’s so different from the one I used to play ice hockey in grammar school. Anyway, when I entered 8th grade, all my friends started playing field hockey. My friends and my mom loved the sport, so I decided to try out for the modified team.

That was 11 years ago; little did I know at the time that field hockey would become such a monumental part of my life. I wound up playing on a very successful team in high school and winning a state championship, and then had the opportunity to play on Central Michigan University’s Division I team where I won a Mid-American Conference championship.

What do I love about field hockey?

Being a part of a competitive field hockey team has helped shape me into the person and professional I am today. It challenged me to develop essential leadership skills, continually improve my performance and realize my full potential as both a student and an athlete. I also learned how to handle conflict, manage my time effectively and mesh with my team’s chemistry – skills that now serve me well as a marketing professional.

Our team was very active in the local community, and I loved volunteering (especially working with children). Over the years I helped out at soup kitchens, participated in fundraising events, and acted as a running coach at a local elementary school.

My favorite things about playing field hockey, however, are the people I’ve met and the camaraderie of being on a team. Playing a D-I sport has allowed me to travel coast to coast, while making amazing memories with teammates who have become lifelong friends.

My most memorable hockey experience?

Eleven years of playing the sport has afforded me so many great experiences that it’s tough to choose just one. But if I had to pick, it would be the last game I played for Central Michigan. We played at Ball State and won 4-1; I scored two goals in that game and got a pretty nice feature in our school’s paper.

I’m happy I was able to go out on a positive note. And while that game marked the end of an era in my life, I’ll never forget the lessons I learned, the experiences I gained and the friends I made.
