SSL – Everything you need to know

Share this:

There is a lot of talk lately regarding SSL and making sure your website is using secured with SSL. You might be scratching your head and asking yourself, “What is SSL and why do I need it?” or, “Why is my website not secure?”. You may have heard that starting in July, non-SSL websites will display an obtrusive warning message in Google Chrome, and scare away potential candidates from your website. We also expect this trend to follow suit on other popular web browsers like Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari.

First, let us help you understand what SSL is, exactly. SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer. SSL is an encryption technology used for securing all website traffic and information. When a website is secured with SSL, you will notice the website address will start with “https” – notice the “s”, which stands for secure. You will also see a green padlock (or similar icon) depending on your web browser.

Why do I need SSL?

According to Happy Penguin, securing your website with SSL is critical for keeping user information, such as resume data, passwords and credit card numbers, out of the hands of hackers. When your website is not using SSL, a hacker’s job becomes easy as they can steal this information without much effort.

Not only does SSL secure and encrypt your website, it also offers several additional benefits. These benefits include, but are not limited to, higher SEO rankings on Google, faster page loading times and, if you are a job board customer, your job postings will be accepted at ZipRecruiter and GlassDoor and reach more potential candidates.

Ok, but why isn’t my website already secure? Didn’t you build it to be secure?

The internet was once a quiet, peaceful and happy place. Having SSL enabled on your website was just a “nice to have” feature and was mainly required for online vendors accepting payments. Unfortunately, with the rise of cybersecurity threats and data theft, this is not the case anymore. The internet has come together to think of ways to mitigate these risks. One of their solutions is to start requiring SSL for everyone, regardless of information on your website.
