Working Your New Year’s Resolutions for 2019 in Reverse

Share this:

A new year is a fresh start and a great time to set new goals for yourself and your staffing agency. Twelve months to achieve something important to you and to grow from past actions and mistakes.

Easier said than done.

Eighty percent of new year’s resolutions fail by the second week of February. Somehow that energy we have at the very start of the year grows stagnant as we settle into routine, get discouraged and let go of our determination.

What can you do to keep your goals going despite these odds?

Every week at Haley Marketing Group our team sits down for a consulting class where we discuss all things marketing, staffing and recruiting. Our last session of the year was focused entirely on goal setting.

Here’s one thing I took away that changed the way I think about creating goals and new year’s resolutions:

Pretend it’s New Year’s Eve 2019. The clock is about to strike twelve and ring in 2020. What was your greatest accomplishment in the past twelve months?

Use this scenario to imagine yourself in the future looking back on what you’ve yet to live through. Positioning yourself in this imaginary context can help you to think about what will be most important to you a year from now, how you hope to grow, what your challenges might be and the steps you’ll need to take to make your resolution a reality.

Perhaps most importantly, this exercise might demonstrate why the goal or resolution is important to you in the first place. If you can imagine yourself already having met success, you can imagine how good it feels to have accomplished that which you may never have thought you could.

Suddenly you might start to believe in yourself and your ability to make that hypothetical New Year’s Eve a year from now your true reality.

Once you can find that motivation, creating SMART goals that get you where you want to go might be less intimidating – hey, it could even be exciting!
