By day, we’re marketing geeks. Computer nerds. Quirky writers and artists. And damn proud of it!

But after hours, our team members shed their marketing capes – and pursue all kinds of cool Hobbies, Interests and Talents (we call them HITs for short).

Here’s what Aaron Stanley, Haley Marketing Front-End Developer, is into:

HIT: Mashup Producer and Performer

Back Story

In my free time, I make audio mashups by combining two or more songs into new arrangements. It started back in college when I stumbled upon the then newly released The Grey Album, where a DJ named Danger Mouse mashed up Jay-Z’s The Black Album and The Beatles’ “White Album.” At the time, I was taking a music production course, so I figured out how to do it myself and made some mashups for my final project.

Since then, over the years I’ve released a handful of my mashups on YouTube and Reddit, which got a lot of positive feedback. Eventually I even put together a band to perform them live which became fairly popular throughout my home state of Illinois.

Expect the Unexpected

My favorite thing about mashups is when people are expecting to hear one song and then another one creeps in. When I was performing with the live group, the best reactions were always at the start of “Enter Sandman” when “Don’t Stop Believing” showed up over it.

Besides that, this experience has opened up my musical tastes to help me appreciate different genres of music. Now I love hearing a song on the radio and thinking of other songs that would pair well with it.

Full Circle Moment

Once you start listening to mashups, it’s hard not to hear them everywhere you go. I love getting approached by people with new ideas! One of the most popular songs I made was arranged with my 8-year-old niece. She had the idea to pair Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” with Fitz & The Tantrum’s “Handclap.” We spent a whole afternoon taking the two songs and combining them into an awesome arrangement that she was super proud of by the end. That’s a great memory for me and we got an awesome song out of it, too. My other highlight was getting one of my mashups retweeted last year by none other than my original inspiration, Danger Mouse!
