Most of us take the ease of how we experience the world around us for granted.

For an individual with disabilities, however, a task as simple as applying to a job on a staffing website can present frustrating challenges.

As we’ve explained in earlier posts, the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 have evolved to make it easier for individuals with disabilities to surf the Web by making websites more perceivable, operable, understandable and robust.

We consider this initiative to be extremely important for both our clients and the individuals they serve.

At Haley Marketing Group, our goal is to protect clients – and create a great user experience for all people – by ensuring WCAG 2.0 AA compliance for all new Starter and Custom websites we build, as well as our career portal software.

Protecting Clients – and Creating a Great User Experience for All

Here’s what we’re doing to ensure our sites and Job Board are accessible to people with disabilities (e.g., color blindness, vision disabilities, hearing disabilities) in a way that’s comparable to the access available to others. We have:

  1. Hired a senior-level web consultant who spent nearly two months researching compliance guidelines, reviewing our sites and products, developing standards for their sites, and creating a path forward to ensure adherence to required standards.
  2. Taught our developers about compliance issues, so they understand the needs of our clients and their website visitors with disabilities.
  3. Updated all Starter Sites to comply with WCAG 2.0’s Level A and Level AA success criteria.
  4. Established a development checklist to ensure that our Starter Sites and Custom websites that we design are compliant.
  5. Revamped our quality control process to check for compliance at two points in our website build process.
  6. Redesigned our Job Board user interface (UI) software to be fully compliant when used on a compliant website.
  7. Rebuild our WordPress plug-in suite to ensure that all our unique website add-ons are also fully compliant.

To a website user without disabilities, many of the changes and enhancements we made are invisible – so the overall look and feel of sites remains largely the same. But for users with accessibility issues, these changes will have a tremendous positive impact:

  • making staffing sites simpler to navigate
  • ensuring the content can be properly processed by a screen reader
  • making jobs easier to search and apply to
  • helping to create a better user experience

That’s good news for the 61 million Americans with disabilities – and every staffing or recruiting firm.
