What do you do when you’re tired, burnt out, and in need of a break?

Only a few months ago the answer to this question was pretty obvious: Take a vacation!

For obvious reasons, however, the beach trips and spa getaways typical of summer may not be possible.

Our ideas of summertime may have been completely redefined by stay-at-home orders and social distancing guidelines, but there are still plenty of ways to practice self-care from the comfort of your home.

Get outside.

If there’s one thing I’ve gained during quarantine, it’s a heightened appreciation for the outdoors. Physical benefits aside, taking a midday walk (following social distancing protocols) can help you find the beauty you might have missed in your immediate surroundings. It may not be Myrtle Beach, but any change of scenery can work wonders.

Maintain social connections.

You can’t bar hop with your old college roommate the way you might during your annual weekend trip – but a virtual game night might be the next best thing! Collect a few game ideas, share them with your friends, and play (and rate and review as you see fit) over Zoom.

Find a new hobby.

Find a way to focus on things you still can do – pick up an instrument, learn to crochet, underwater basket weave – so when empty time creeps up on you, you have a backup plan. Plenty of websites offer free and low-cost resources to fight boredom, especially if you’re looking to acquire new niche knowledge.

Set goals.

Goals break up what can very easily become monotony in day-to-day life; creating goals drives motivation and can help increase your sense of productivity. Your weekly to-do list? Those tasks are goals – start seeing them as an opportunity for accomplishment rather than chores. Hey, every little bit helps, right?

Lastly, focus on the positive.

It’s tempting to allow the impact of COVID-19 to dictate your attitude, focus, and thought processes. Don’t. Easier said than done, of course, but there’s a reason this advice continues to be shared across countless platforms. Adopting a positive mindset leaves you in a position to take better care of yourself and the people around you.

After all, you’re no good to your team, your clients or your associates unless you’re good to yourself.
