Should You Delete Old Blog Posts or Refresh Them?

Share this:

If you are looking to clean up old content on your site or create a new website, it’s important to think about if you should be deleting or updating content. You may be thinking:

  • Are people even reading this content?
  • Is the content relevant?
  • Is this content a waste of space?
  • Does this impact my website’s SEO?

Here are some best practices to ensure you’re maintaining and improving your website’s SEO.

Is the content still relevant?

If the blog post is still a large topic of conversation and relevant, then the best option would be to update the article. If you have never considered updating old blogs and have only created new content, you may be missing out on potential traffic.

Old blogs that are revamped help leverage SEO ranking and can even double your traffic. Once you’ve updated the blog, you will want to reshare it and promote it on social media.

Best Practices for Updating Old Blogs:

    • Add updated information or a fresher perspective
    • Check for broken links
    • Add imagery (infographics, video, images)
    • Add more timely links
    • Update your keywords

What if the content isn’t relevant?

If you have content written on products or services you no longer offer or announcements that are no longer relevant, you can delete those blogs. However, if you decide to get rid of this content and the pages still get a lot of traffic organically or from backlinks, you will want to do a redirect. Through a 301 redirect, you can link that blog’s traffic to another relevant page to preserve the SEO value.
