“How often should I be mailing?”
“How much is too much?”
“I don’t want to bombard my list.”

These are common questions and concerns that I hear from my clients.  The answer is…well there is no right answer to this question.

Most of my clients will send one to two emails per month.  However, I have several clients who send out a mailing every week.  The best metric to look at is your opt-out rate.  If you begin to see an increase in opt outs it might be time to scale back the amount of mailings you are sending.

The most important factor is to make sure that the emails you are sending are filled with useful information for your readers.  That way they will always appreciate your mailings and will be less likely to opt out.

  1. Todd,

Good advice. Another thing to consider in regard to frequency is what type of content are you sending. A newsletter is generally best once a month. A top candidates email may be best weekly, bi-weekly or ad-hoc as you find great talent to market. If you’re promoting an upcoming event, you may want 3 or 4 email invitiations–starting 30 days or more in advance and repeating the invite two weeks prior to the event and then again a couple of days before.

With a little creative planning you can find lots of different and useful reasons to email your clients, prospects and candidates–without annoying them.
