What does creative mean to you? The definition of creativity is the use of the imagination or original ideas. In my industry, being creative is vital. Most people think web developers only build websites, when, in fact, they are also creating concepts and designing the site as well. It can be a struggle at times to come up with original designs. How do you overcome that creative block and sustain your creativity?
Get inspiration offline
I put this one first, because I feel it is most important. Most of us are on a computer, plugged into the internet during our 9-5. Then, we continue to connect via our personal devices into the late hours of the evening. Get off your phone and look around. Inspiration for creativity can be found through other sources. Take a walk, listen to music, or relax in a hammock.
Step outside your comfort zone
Our comfort zone is just that – a place of comfort. It is where failure is very minimal. How can we improve ourselves if we become complacent? Take risks and try challenging yourself! Too uncomfortable? Take a friend with you! Not only will you learn something new, but your new experience may help you find a creative solution to a future problem.
Switch it up
Day in and day out, we all have the same routine. It’s the structure that keeps us efficient. Creativity can be found outside your usual routine. Take a different route to work, dare I say: Get lost! Maybe do your morning ritual out of order. Your brain is then forced to find new, creative ways to accomplish your day to day tasks.
