Aug. 31, 2008: The Democractic party of Japan won an historic election Sunday and has issued a proposal to ban temporary workers. In Japan, approximately one-third of workers work in less secure temporary, contract and part-time jobs.
While the new ruling party is attempting to improve job security, flexible workforce strategies have enabled Japanese manufacturers to keep costs low in the automotive and electronics industries and been key to the country’s growth over the past decade.
Both analysts and corporate executives fear that any policies to restrict the use of temporary labor will be bad for business, hurt employment and reduce Japan’s competitiveness in the global market.
