Do you have the attention span of a monkey? Or do you pride yourself on your keen attention to detail?
See how you stack up on this interesting test.
Watch the video below of two teams of people passing a ball back and forth to each other. Pay close attention to the team in white and count the number of times they pass the ball to each other. A pass is anytime one member of the white team either hands the ball to another person, throws or “bounces” the ball to another person.

So what number did you get?
Well to be honest with you I really don’t care what number you came up with, that wasn’t the real goal of this exercise. Did you happen to see the big gorilla that came onto the screen? No, I’m not kidding and this isn’t a metaphor for something. About 1/2 way through the video a huge gorilla walked into the middle of the screen and started pounding its chest.
Did you see him or were you too laser focused on counting the number of passes? And if you don’t believe me try watching the video again and look for him this time.
The point of this exercise is that sometimes we’re so consumed with the little things every day that we miss something that’s staring us right in the face. As a business leader, you sometimes need to take a step back and look at the big picture instead of getting too caught up in the details and issues that arise each day.
