Ask Haley: How to avoid copyright traps when blogging

Share this:

Q: Can I copy or incorporate other ideas or articles into our blog site or do all blogs have to be originally written?

A: Sharing articles, concepts or ideas that will help your clients is a great way to build relationships and position you as a trusted advisor.

That being said, you do need to keep a couple things in mind when you incorporate other’s ideas into your blog.

Don’t plagiarize content.
Instead take a quote from the article, paraphrase an idea, or write your interpretation of the article–just remember to cite the source and/or link back to the original article. This way nobody’s content is getting pirated, the source is being credited, and you are still producing content about the topic you want your readers to see. Win-win!

To give you a better idea of what I mean, here’s a post I recently wrote for the Haley blog. In the blog post, I mention an existing article on another site, give my opinion about the topic, and then provide a link to the original article.

And, if you would like help producing great blog content or even setting up a blog, just give me a call.  I’d be happy to help.
